Reruns

Here we are with a “new” Congress and after watching this charade for these many years I’ve become rather ho-hum about the whole thing. The only good part about the outcome of this election is the gridlock that will follow. Our founders wanted it difficult for the state to exert power over the citizens and hence our complex system of getting legislation passed is a blessing.

Many times I’ve wished that voters would become well informed and vote for the best candidate. I will grant you that the two parties don’t always offer good choices but the public still seems willing to accept the obvious pandering by politicians. The first time I voted was for Ronald Reagan. He seemed like a reasonable man with a way of encouraging optimism. This can’t be said for any of the current crop of politicians. In fact in the identity politics of today, finding a smiling face is getting harder to come by.

By nature, I am a pessimist. Rerunning the same show year after year used to be frustrating and somewhat boring; now it’s become alarming. It used to be the case that when the election was over, the old president went home to his old life. Congress went back to the business of screwing up our lives and the Supreme Court? They went on deciding issues they had no business sticking their nose in. Things have changed.

Every presidential election of the last thirty years has been termed the most important election in our lives. I suppose this is because we are fairly evenly divided in numbers on issues. But after all the political chicanery of the last hundred years, I do believe we’ve reached a crescendo of division that can’t be resolved. The left, after years of unfettered destruction of individual rights, has suddenly been blindsided by an outsider who doesn’t know how to play the game. Actually, he refuses to play their game. For this reason, they must stop the current occupant of the White House. They won’t accept the results of an election that was “in the bag”.

I imagine if Jeb Bush would have become president there would have been no controversy. As Donald Trump noted, Jeb was weak. He would have been milk toast to deal with. Sure, a loud cry would have been voiced about dynasty but weak candidates can be overcome easily well they’re in office and defeated in an election later.

Politicians and voters alike love the reruns; well not all of us mind you. Some, for what seems like a useless effort, are pretty well informed. All we need is a few good men. Alas, in reality, we need a whole bunch of good men and they just don’t produce them in great quantity anymore.
