Thanksgiving 2023
Our world is in turmoil. American life isn’t supposed to be in such chaos. We have an agreed-upon set of values; at least that used to be the case. Christian values were a necessary ingredient in this new country we called America. Everyone agreed it was wrong to steal, kill without reason, cheat your neighbor, or even break the vows you made to your spouse.
Did everyone adhere to those principles? Of course not; men have a propensity to do evil things. Our founding documents highlighted the aims of a self-governed people,. We acknowledged a Creator who bestowed upon man rights that couldn’t be rescinded by another man, that being the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit, not of pleasure, but of happiness.
We were to self-govern ourselves using Biblical principles, to be more exact, the Ten Commandments. Over the decades the assault on these values has been constant which leads us into the precarious position we’re in, God lifting his hand from us. Do we try to keep our tattered Constitution in some form or do we discard it? This is where we’re at, a nation of unthankful degenerates. “Fixing” our country involves being thankful for all things and not assuming anyone, especially God, owes us anything.
Will we return to those thrilling days of yesteryear and revive that spirit of our founders. I think not. We’ve become a mindless blob of narcissistic citizens with our hands continually held out for another government-supplied crumb stolen from our neighbor or our posterity.
So what’s the solution to all this madness. Simple, repent; each one of us must repent. We kid ourselves if we say we haven’t benefited from the unrighteous acts of our fellow citizens.
So why do we suffer the loss of freedom? What does God say?
Romans 1:18-23 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them, for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse,
Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was darkened, professing themselves to be wise, they became fools and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
We are an unthankful people. It is high time to start being thankful.
Psalm 92: 1-2 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and to sing praises unto his name, O most High: to show forth thy loving kindness and thy faithfulness every night.
Every day, every night I am thankful, thankful for life, for the liberty to know Christ and pursue happiness in his service. Thank you, Lord for all your goodness to me.
